Heavenly Ever After: Veteran Actress Kim Hye-ja’s Return to the Screen
Korean legendary actress Kim Hye-ja has returned to our screens with Heavenly Ever After (천국보다 아름다운), a touching and whimsical drama about love, destiny, and the beauty of human connections. At 84 years old, Kim Hye-ja proves once again why she is often called the “Nation’s Mother,” captivating viewers with her heartfelt performance and timeless presence.
A Role Written Just for Her
The drama was crafted from the start with Kim Hye-ja in mind. Director Kim Seok-yoon, who previously worked with her on The Light in Your Eyes (눈이 부시게), revealed that this project began as a “Kim Hye-ja Project.” The goal was to create a story where the actress could fully showcase her acting prowess in a heartfelt, meaningful way.
Kim plays Lee Hae-sook, an 80-year-old woman who reunites with her husband in heaven after a sudden accident separated them on Earth. Believing she looks her best at 80, she appears in her elderly form, only to find that her husband (played by Son Suk-ku) has returned to his 30s. This charming yet bittersweet twist forms the heart of the series.
More Than a Fantasy: Exploring Love and Relationships
Although set in heaven, Heavenly Ever After is not just a fantasy. It gently explores themes of enduring love, unbreakable bonds, and the small, everyday moments that define our lives. The playful bickering between Lee Hae-sook and her youthful-looking husband adds humor and warmth, while reminding us how precious human relationships are.
“Viewers will definitely relate to my character,” Kim shared during the press conference. “She was left alone in this harsh world after losing her husband. I believe many people will empathize with her journey and emotions.”
A Dream Team of Familiar Faces
Alongside Kim Hye-ja, the drama features familiar names like Son Suk-ku, Han Ji-min, Lee Jung-eun, and Cheon Ho-jin. Interestingly, Son Suk-ku was personally recommended by Kim Hye-ja herself after watching his powerful performance in My Liberation Notes.
Actors Han Ji-min and Lee Jung-eun, who worked with the director before, also volunteered to join as soon as they heard Kim Hye-ja was the lead. Their presence brings depth and richness to the storytelling, making the drama a must-watch.
Kim Hye-ja’s Eternal Passion for Acting
Despite her age and legendary status, Kim Hye-ja humbly stated, “I don’t know anything else — acting is all I care about.” She added that working on Heavenly Ever After could possibly be her last role, which made the experience even more meaningful and precious for her.
